How to get into the Bürgerbüro in Düsseldorf faster
You've just moved, you need to do your Anmeldung (address registration), and the online booking shows nothing free. The good news: new slots appear all the time, they just go fast. Here is what actually helps.

Bürgerbüro: Anmeldung, passport, change of address
1. Book only on the official website
All Düsseldorf Bürgerbüros are booked through one portal: termine.duesseldorf.de. Booking is free. If a website sells you a "guaranteed appointment", it is not the city.
2. Choose any Bürgerbüro, not just the one in your district
You don't have to go to the office in your own district. Check every location in the portal, not just one.
3. Check early in the morning and several times a day
Cancelled appointments become free again during the day. Your best chances are early in the morning. Check in the morning, at lunchtime and in the evening.
4. Book ahead
At the Bürgerbüro at the main station (Dienstleistungszentrum, Willi-Becker-Allee 7) you can book up to four weeks in advance. If you know your moving date, book right away.
5. Use the Terminagent
The city offers a "Terminagent" service that helps you find a free slot. You'll find it on duesseldorf.de.
6. Confirm your booking
After booking you get an email with a confirmation link. Your appointment is only passed on to the office after you click it. Check your spam folder.
7. Bring all documents so you don't have to book twice
For the Anmeldung you need:
passport or ID of everyone you are registering;
the completed Anmeldeformular;
the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung, a confirmation from your landlord. Without it you can't register;
for families: marriage and birth certificates with a certified translation.
The appointment itself usually takes about 15 minutes, and you get the registration confirmation on the spot. Your tax ID (Steuer-ID) arrives by post about 2–3 weeks later.
Important: you must register within 2 weeks of moving in. If there are no appointments, keep screenshots of your booking attempts.
Foreigners' office (Amt für Migration und Integration)
Düsseldorf's foreigners' office is at Erkrather Str. 377 and works by appointment only, with no walk-in. Waiting times for an appointment can be several weeks.
What helps:
Apply early. Don't wait until the last month before your residence permit expires.
If your permit is about to expire and you have no appointment, submit your extension application in writing, by post or email, before it expires, and keep proof that you sent it. If you apply in time, your stay remains legal until the office decides (Fiktionswirkung).
Call the multilingual hotline: 0211 89-21020, Tuesday and Thursday 4–7 pm, Friday 1–4 pm (please check on the city's website).
